Environmental health professionals perform research in poor minority
communities according to research interests, funding availability, human study
guidelines, and time limits. Most environmental health professionals who
perform research work for colleges and government agencies. Several groups within
the Department of Health and Human Services are focused on environmental health
research. Their goal is to exchange information
about, and develop methods for, environmental health research, exposure
assessments, risk assessments, and risk management procedures.
Environmental Protection Agency's environmental health research is
mainly focused on how to assess and manage risk from environmental dangers and
is performed by the Office of Research and Development.
EPA research that has a major effect on regulations are reviewed by a Science Advisory
Board.
Colleges with environmental health training often perform research. Environmental health clinics
and poison control
clinics located throughout the country that are often associated with
colleges or health agencies. In addition, the Society for Environmental Toxicology
and Chemistry has regional chapters around the country.
The easiest way to find scientific articles on environmental health research is
through the National Library
of Medicine. The PubMed search engine has short descriptions of the
research results for millions of articles. News about environmental health
research is also available from the National
Library of Medicine's Medline and Environmental Health Perspectives.
